Her Children Were Only Ever Eggs

Her Children Were Only Ever Eggs

2021

33.5” x 32” x 2” (framed)

Textile-based mixed media

Materials: Vintage textiles, thread, buttons, fabric

Her Children Were Only Ever Eggs is the second installment in my Motherhood series. The central doily represents a womb and the life that can begin within it. The vintage handkerchief symbolizes a woman’s body as a whole and its lavender trim represents mourning in the Victorian language of color. The 32 fabric-covered buttons surrounding the body represent a few of the 1-2 million eggs that a woman is born with.
