Breakfast at a Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant
My husband and I love to go out for breakfast on the weekend – most often on Sunday – though we don’t opt for the fancy and expensive brunches that many choose. Instead, we make the drive over to Santa Ana and have breakfast at small Mexican restaurants that some wouldn’t even look twice at.
We love a good hole-in-the-wall restaurant, you see. Not only is the food tasty and moderately priced, we can enjoy our food while we’re very casually dressed. We used to eat at a restaurant on Standard in Santa Ana. They had handmade corn tortillas – yum! Eventually we switched to a restaurant off of Main in Santa Ana, where they had great pozole. (For all the non-Mexicans out there, pozole is a hominy-based pre-Columbian soup or stew from Mexico) Sadly, that restaurant was sold and we’ve moved on in search of our new favorite.
We’ve visited a restaurant three times now that seems to be our new “usual”. They have green pozole for José (is that a Mexican version of green eggs and ham?!), and a variety of things for me to try when I’m in the mood for something that’s not served in a bowl.
Our routine:
- Roll out of bed
- Throw on clothes and baseball hats
- Drive to Santa Ana
- Enter restaurant and order pozole for both, a Coke in a bottle for José, and a Diet Coke in a can for me
- Enjoy the yummy goodness while talking and relaxing
- Return home, satisfied, with tummies full of good food

If you live in Orange County and would like to try a hole-in-the-wall for yourself, try Las Brisas at 1524 S. Flower Street in Santa Ana. Their weekend hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you don’t speak Spanish, be ready to point at things on the menu. You might be a bit out of your comfort zone, but you just might end up liking it!
Warm regards,
Melody
