Giving Thanks

Confession: I’m a planner by nature.  I love to set goals and make plans.  I especially love to have something fun/wonderful/exciting to look forward to.  Whether it’s a trip, a half marathon, or something else that’s out of the ordinary, these kinds of things help me move towards goals, and help me through the challenging – and monotonous – days.

That said, I like to think I’m pretty good at living in the moment as well.  I take time to notice and appreciate the little things that others might overlook: dust motes sparkling in a sunbeam, raindrops bejeweling a Bird of Paradise.  I also strive to be thankful for the many blessings in my life, and to express my thanks in a timely manner.  These latter qualities are serving me well now.

I’m struggling a bit, you see, as many of the goals and plans I’d made for this year are likely up in smoke.  Circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, and right now I can’t think month to month – it’s day by day.  Sometimes it’s hour by hour.  I can’t plan much of anything – except for the continued need to be flexible and to be thankful.  Though I’m facing some challenges, there are many good things in my life.

So, in the spirit of gratitude, here are ten things I’m thankful for, in no particular order:

1. My health.  I’m incredibly thankful for every breath I take and for my overall well being.
2. Kind gestures gifted by others, like finding a card and a tiny origami crane on my desk at work.
3. My husband, friends, and family – including my 12 nieces and nephews.
4. Baskin Robbins Pralines ‘n Cream ice cream.
5. Laughter.  I love to laugh so hard that tears run down my face.
6. Movies.  I recently saw The King’s Speech, and love being drawn into a good story.
7. Freedom of speech and the many other freedoms I enjoy.
8. My bunnies.  They’re so adorable and soft – and what personalities!
9. The beauties and intricacies of nature – there are so many.
10. Food, shelter, transportation, and health care.  These are actually four separate things to be grateful for but I’ve combined them to keep this list shorter.

I’m also thankful for my literacy, and for my ability to express myself through both visual art and the written word.  Thank you for tuning into my blog and for your interest in what springs forth from my mind, hands, and heart.  I hope you all have a blessed week!

Warm regards,
